Saifoloi Aganon

Saifoloi Aganon was born on O‘ahu and raised above Kalapana known as Pūlama ridge on the island of Hawai‘i. Kalapana filled Saiʻs younger years with an appreciation for the Hawaiian culture and the Hawaiian people. After many evacuations by lava flows, his family decided to move back to Kaimukī, O‘ahu in the presence of Leahi, a landmark known throughout the world. Sai received his Masters degree from the University of Hawai‘i, Myron B. Thompson School of social work. He enjoy his job as a social worker at Catholic Charities Hawai‘i. Saiʻs work allows him to help families and children experiencing challenges to find resources and hopefully start their own path to healing.

In February 2001, Sai joined Hālau Nā Mamo o Pu‘uanahulu where hula has become an integral part of his life.

“Through hula I am able to connect with a power greater than myself. It is through hula I have realized that everyone has a place and knowing one’s place in hula and in life has many rewards. I hope to continue to give back to the Hawaiian culture by studying and perpetuating the art of hula for many more years to come.”

Everyone’s journey to hula is unique. Hula has instilled in me a deeper and richer sense of respect for the Hawaiian people and the Hawaiian culture.
